Lens Crafty

I came across a box of old glass lenses. I'm not sure what they were in their first life (Do you know? If so, leave a comment!), but they had this great texture to them. T and I had been thinking of making some screens or light fixtures, and this looked like it might be a good source material. And who wants a box filled with dusty old disks of glass? Well, I mean, other than me.

I was headed to the studio to work on some glass pieces, and I got the idea to shape one of them in the kiln. When it came out, the lens was transformed into the cutest little dish, perfect for corralling earrings or loose change on your dresser. I'll be making more of these.

This weekend!

So much going on in Oakland this weekend. Here are some things your lab mates are up to:

1. Sat-Sun, 10-4: Katie will be selling her glass dishes, platters, and more at the Crucible's Open House and Gifty Sale. If you haven't been to this before, it's a fantastic place to get unusual holiday gifts. If you're there on Saturday, stop by the glass area and say "hi." There will be over 70 different artists there, plus a full open house with glass blowing, metal casting, and blacksmithing demos. Santa arrives at 1pm (in past years, he's come in on a fire truck).

2. Saturday night: Oliver will be performing with Mobius Operandi at Johansson Project.

So head on over to Oaktown, finish up your holiday shopping @ the Crucible, then head downtown to see Oliver. Hope to see you there!

Work in progress: Katie's business card lampshade

Um...he doesn't work here anymore.

Remember the post brainstorming what to do with old business cards? As some of you know, we're wrapping up the second month of lighting month at Process 376. The inspiration for this one was a box of cards* with a fantastic orange pattern on the back, and I worked
them into a temporary lampshade in time for our big design show-and-tell-and-drink last week.

Ingredients:
  • Hideous pendant lampshade (thrifted cost $2, including cord kit and working CFL bulb)
  • Tyvek Fed Ex envelope (used and free)
  • ~100+ stale business cards (free)
I stripped the original shade down to the frame. Then I cut the cards into strips and laid them out on the Tyvek envelope. I do a lot of mosaic-ish layouts in my glass work, so it didn't take long to find a pattern I liked. Glue + patience = voila! The final texture is interesting, and I like the way it looks with light behind it. I still have some details to polish (Binder clips? No.) before it's done, but there's potential here.

The full photo session (thanks to Tricia and Alex!) is on for next week, so expect a flurry of strange and wonderful Process 376 lighting coming soon.

*Kindly left behind by one of my coworkers who has moved on tilt at other windmills.
