"Repurposed obsolete object"

I spotted this in a round-up of eco lighting options on Apartment Therapy's Re-Nest. I'm not really sure what it is, but it looks like they found this fantastic and odd white piece, described only as "repurposed obsolete object", then carved a chunk of black walnut to complete the shape, then illuminated the whole thing.

The studio is called The Last Attempt At Greatness (TLAAG) and they're in Portland (of course!). Unfortunately, this oddity is their only lamp, but check out the rest of their portfolio. They have a charming and quirky style that I really like.
